Farmingdale State Recognized by NCAA with National Diversity in Athletics Award
- One of Seven Colleges Nationally Recognized for Gender Equity -
Farmingdale State has been recognized by the NCAA with a national
Diversity in Athletics award, one of only 38 colleges and
universities across the country to be cited. Farmingdale’s
award, in the category of Gender Equity, was made based on
independent research that analyzed gender equity compliance and was
only one of seven given nationally.
The award given to Farmingdale State was based on the proportion
of female athletes relative to the proportion of female
undergraduates. Data was collected from all NCAA Division III
athletic departments and through questionnaires and archival
sources. The data was analyzed by the Laboratory for Diversity in
Sport at Texas A&M University.
“We take pride in the success of our athletics program, the
performance of our student-athletes in the classroom, and in the
positive environment we create for all student-athletes, both male
and female,” said W. Hubert Keen, President of Farmingdale
State College. “I want to commend Athletic Director Mike
Harrington and his staff for the excellent job they do in
administering a program that is highly successful in every
way.”
The only other SUNY college recognized was the College of
Brockport, in the category of Vision and Attitudinal Diversity.
Farmingdale State was also the only Division III college on Long
Island honored.
Farmingdale State’s success in gender equity is paralleled by
its success on the field. Last year, six teams won Skyline
Conference championships, including the men’s basketball team
who reached the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament and the Baseball
Team who reached the College World Series. Already this year, the
women’s soccer team captured its third straight Skyline
Conference title, the men's golf team won their third Championship
in the past four seasons and the men's cross country team won their
first-ever Skyline Title.
