Farmingdale, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State College athletics department officially opened their newly renovated state-of-the-art gymnasium today in the Nold Athletic Complex with the help of FSC President Dr. John S. Nader.
Joining President Nader at the event were over 250 student-athletes, along with the administration, faculty and staff of the Farmingdale State campus community. Opening speeches were made by President Nader, Athletic Director Mike Harrington and basketball student-athletes junior Liz Durchalter (Franklin Square, N.Y.) and senior Weldon Irvine (Queens, N.Y.).
Following the speeches, the basketball teams were introduced and showed off some of their skills for the crowd. The main event featured the 3-point competition - men vs. women. For the women's side, Coach Mooney chose senior Meghan Cleary (East Meadow, N.Y.) and sophomore AJ Smith (Freeport, N.Y.), while men's Coach Brendan Twomey selected junior Trey Kinard (Deer Park, N.Y.) and sophomore Matthew Graham (Valley Stream, N.Y.). After the first minute, the women were ahead 10-5, but the men rallied back to take the 18-14 victory.
The new Rams gymnasium features wood flooring for the main basketball and volleyball court, surrounded by synthetic flooring with a 10 lap-to-the-mile track. The gymnasium serves as the home for men's and women's basketball, women's volleyball and the men's and women's track teams. Also included in the renovation were three Daktronics LED scoreboards, a 19-foot Daktronics scorers table and Nickerson Corporation bleachers with seating for 2,000 plus (including endline movable bleachers to complete a wrap-around arena-type effect for games).
Below are some photos from the event. GO RAMS!
