Cape Cod, Mass. - The Farmingdale State baseball team received a bid to the ECAC Division III Metro Championships, which will take place on May 19-20, 2006. The Rams were ranked the #4-seed in the Championship and will face top-seed Rutgers-Newark on Friday, May 19th at 3:00pm. The winner will face either #2-John Jay or #3-Manhattanville in the Championship game on Saturday, May 20th at 12:00 Noon.
Farmingdale State finished the regular season with a 19-18 record overall, 12-6 in the Skyline. The Rams missed a conference playoff spot by the margin of just one victory, as the top-five teams in the conference were seperated by just two wins. Farmingdale finished off the season on a 3-game win streak with a double-header split against Stevens and a double-header sweep over Mount Saint Mary.
The team has made a complete turnaround with the hiring of former major-leaguer, Keith Osik. The Rams won 12 more games than last season and finished 5th in the conference, compared to last years' 9th place standing. Three players were named All-Conference this season, including junior outfielder Nick Barone, sophomore utility player Keith King and freshman outfielder Tom Heeman.
Offensively, the team was led by sophomore Rich Santoro, who led the team in hitting this season with a team-high 42 hits and a .372 batting average. Santoro will look for a big game on Friday to help knock off the top-seed Rutgers Newark for a spot in the ECAC Metro Championship game on Saturday. The top-two pitchers, sophomores Jesse Scott and Bill Jansen will be ready for the Friday start. Scott had another great season with a 5-3 record and threw the second No-Hitter of his career in a 5-0 win against Kings Point. Jansen finished the season 4-2 with an earned run average of 1.62. He is ranked 26th in the nation in Division III for ERA.
The team will be playing on Friday afternoon at Riverfront Stadium in Newark, NJ. The stadium is home of the Newark Bears, a professional minor-league baseball team. For directions to the stadium, click here: http://www.newarkbears.com/directions/.
