NEWARK, NJ – Seniors Dave Sica (Lyndhurst, NJ/Lyndhurst HS), Mike Marcucci (Whitehouse Station, NY/Immaculata) and freshman rightfielder Brian Gill (Manasquan, NJ/Wall) had three hits apiece to lead a 19-hit Rutgers-Newark attack as the Scarlet Raiders defeated Farmingdale State, 16-6, to advance to Sunday's title game of the ECAC Division III Metro Baseball Championship against John Jay, an 11-7 winner over Manhattanville. Senior reliever James Cariello (Springfield, NJ/Jonathan Dayton) picked up the win in relief of junior lefthander Tom Reynolds (Garfield, NJ/Garfield) for Rutgers.
The Rams got to Reynolds for three runs in the first inning on two singles, a double and a pair of throwing errors on a stolen base attempt. Reynolds went four and a third, giving up four runs on eight hits while striking out four and walking two. Cariello (4-2) finished the game, giving up two runs on a home run by freshman Tom Heeman (Valley Stream, NY/Hewlett). Heeman started in centerfield, moved to pitcher, then finished at shortstop for Farmingdale State while going three for four at the plate. Junior outfielder Nick Barone (North Babylon, NY/North Babylon) also went three for four in the game, scoring one run in the first. Sophomore Keith King (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) had two hits on the day for Farmingdale.
Ram starter Rob Savarese (Syosset, NY/Syosset) retired the first six batters of the game over the first two innings, before the Raiders exploded for six runs on seven hits in the bottom of the third inning. Rutgers led 8-4 after the fourth and increased the lead in the sixth, scoring six runs on five hits, two walks and a hit batter to make it 14-4. Two more runs from Farmingdale and two more from the Raiders would end the game in the run-rule.
The Rams finish the season with a 19-19 record, making their first appearance ever in the ECAC Metro Championships.
