May 3, 2007

Manhattanville College, 8

Farmingdale State, 4

Purchase, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State baseball team fell 8-4 against Manhattanville College in the first day of the Skyline Conference Tournament on Thursday May 3rd, held on Manhattanville's campus in Purchase, N.Y.

Farmingdale started strong as they loaded up the bases in the first inning, but with two outs and a possible hit by junior second baseman Frank Italiano (Sayville, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) a runners interference call would cost a couple runs with three players left on base.

The Valiants were out 1, 2, 3 in the first, but scored six runs over the next three innings to hold a 6-0 lead. In the fifth, the Rams started chipping away with an RBI single by sophomore third basemen Tom Heeman (Valley Stream, N.Y./Hewlett) to cut the deficit to 6-1. Farmingdale got one more run in the sixth and two in the seventh, but would fail to come through with a big hit leaving 10 men on base.

In this double-elimination tournament, the Rams will need to win both games on Saturday to advance to the Championship game on Sunday afternoon. Farmingdale is scheduled to face Centenary College on Saturday, May 5th at 3:00 p.m. The winner of that game advances to play at 6:00 p.m, and the Championship will take place on Sunday, May 6th at Noon.
