Farmingdale, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State baseball team split a conference doubleheader with St. Joseph’s College (11-9, 5-3 Skyline) in Farmingdale, N.Y. The Golden Eagles came back in the first game to win, 3-1. The Rams (12-11, 5-1 Skyline) bounced back in the second, shutting out St. Joseph’s, 5-0.
Junior starting pitcher Tom Heeman (Valley Stream, N.Y./Hewlett) pitched a good game, shutting down St. Joseph’s bats for the first six innings. Senior left fielder Fred Morales (Islandia, N.Y./Central Islip) broke the ice for the Golden Eagles with 2-out, 2-run double down the left field line. Morales came around to score an insurance run on senior catcher John Schwenzer’s (Bohemia, N.Y./Connetquot) single down the right field line.
Farmingdale State’s freshman first baseman Kevin Curtis (Riverhead, N.Y./Riverhead) went 2-for-4 with a double and a run-scoring single. Junior shortstop Brian Benvenuto (Dix Hills, N.Y./Hills West/ Nassau) added three singles.

The game ended with a dramatic hot-shot up the middle that hit off Saverese’s face. An alert sophomore catcher Ray Levan (Brentwood, N.Y./Brentwood) picked up the ball and threw to first, just getting the St. Joseph’s batter for a 1-2-3 putout.
