Auburn, N.Y. - Despite committing seven errors and totaling only
five hits over nine innings, sixth-seeded and defending regional
champion Farmingdale State College scored four unearned runs in the
fifth inning to break open a one-run lead en-route to a 9-5 triumph
over third-seeded SUNY Oneonta in an opening round game of regional
play at the 2010 NCAA

Auburn, N.Y. - Despite committing seven errors and totaling only
five hits over nine innings, sixth-seeded and defending regional
champion Farmingdale State College scored four unearned runs in the
fifth inning to break open a one-run lead en-route to a 9-5 triumph
over third-seeded SUNY Oneonta in an opening round game of regional
play at the 2010 NCAA
Division III Championship at Falcon Park in Auburn,
NY.With the win, the Rams (25-15) move
on to face either second-seeded St. John Fisher College and the College at
Brockport in a winner's bracket contest on Thursday, May
20th at 7:45 pm. The Red Dragons (28-12) will face the loser of the
Fisher-Brockport game in an elimination game at 1:15
pm
Farmingdale jumped to a 4-0 lead
through an inning and a half before Oneonta scored twice in the
bottom of the second and added a run in the bottom of the third to
pull to within a run. Farmingdale took the lead to stay in the top
of the fifth, tallying four runs on two hits with an Oneonta
error.
Oneonta tacked on a pair of runs in
the bottom of the fifth, but could not muster any offense over the
final four innings, stranding five runners. Farmingdale added a run
in the final inning for the final
score.
Senior catcher Zak Nersesian*
(VALLEY COTTAGE, NY/Nyack) was the lone player for the Rams with
multiple hits, batting 2-for-5 with three runs scored. Junior first baseman Kevin
Curtis* (RIVERHEAD, NY/Riverhead) and senior Danny
Moscatelli (MASSAPEQUA, NY/Massapequa) each batted 1-for-4
at the plate, with Curtis scoring twice with a run batted in and
Moscatelli driving in a pair of runs.
The Red Dragons totaled seven hits on
five errors, with two players registering multiple hits. Freshman
catcher Brian Marotta (CLIFTON PARK, NY/Shenendehowa) hit 2-for-4 with
a run scored and two RBI, while senior third
baseman Steve Gauck (CLIFTON PARK, NY/Shenendehowa) batted
2-for-5 with a run scored.
Sophomore righthander Chris
Phelan (PATCHOGUE/Patchogue-Medford) pitched seven and a
third innings, yielding seven hits, five runs (two earned) and a
walk, while striking out eight to pick up the win (6-4).
Oneonta senior righthander Dave Filak (SCOTIA, NY/Burnt Hills)
registered his first loss of the season (8-1), tossing eight
innings, giving up only four hits and striking out eight,
while yielding eight runs (three earned).
