Rams Stay Alive with Win over Clarkson

#4 Farmingdale State - 19, #6 Clarkson - 10


Farmingdale, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State baseball team defeated Clarkson University, 19-10, to stay alive in the double-elimination NCAA Division III New York Regionals. The Rams improved to 27-15 with the victory, while Clarkson fell to 22-20. Both teams still face elimination in tomorrow's games.

Farmingdale State took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on an RBI groundout from junior Steve King (Freeport, N.Y.) that scored junior Donny Moscatelli (Massapequa, N.Y.).

The Rams added three more runs in the third inning to take the 4-0 lead, with inning opening hits from Frank Yera (Manhattan, N.Y.) and Vinny Block (Merrick, N.Y.). Sophomore Kevin Curtis (Riverhead, N.Y.) brought in Yera on a sacrifice fly to center field and Block and junior Mike Labrozzi (Sag Harbor, N.Y.) came home on an error.

Clarkson came back with four runs on four hits to tie the game at 4-4 after three innings played.

Farmingdale junior James Raimondi (Medford, N.Y.) was brought in for relief in the third and his team added 10 more runs over the next three innings, increasing the lead to 14-7. Clarkson junior Brady Torbitt (Fulton, N.Y.) and the Rams' Labrozzi both homered over the center field fence.

In the ninth inning with the score 19-7, the Golden Knights started a rally with four hits and three runs scored, but sophomore Gary Troy (Rocky Point, N.Y.) closed the game with a strikeout to secure the Rams victory.

For Farmingdale, Block finished the game 3-for-5 with 3 RBI's, senior Brian Benvenuto (Dix Hills, N.Y.) went 3-for-4 with 2 RBI's. Labrozzi was 2-for-4 with 3 RBI's and Yera hit 2-for-3 with 2 RBI's. Raimondi picked up his fourth win, throwing 5.1 innings while allowing just two hits.

Clarkson's junior Matt Curry (Richland, N.Y.) went 2-for-5 with 4 RBI's, while Torbitt finished 2-for-2. Sophomore pitcher David Goerold (Clifton Park, N.Y.) pitched the loss (4-4) in 3.2 innings, allowing five hits with three strikeouts.

Farmingdale will now play top-seed Cortland at 7:00 p.m. on Friday night, in an elimination game, while Clarkson faces the loser of tomorrows Noon game, between #3 RPI and #5 Western New England.
