Five Run Eighth Powers Rams Past Manhattanville

Farmingdale, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State baseball team improved to 20-11 on the season with a 6-3 win over non-conference opponent Manhattanville (16-13) this afternoon in Farmingdale, N.Y.
After allowing three runs in the second inning, junior designated hitter Mike Labrozzi (Sag Harbor, N.Y./Pierson) hit a solo homerun to left field to open the scoring for the Rams. No runs were scored over the next five innings until Farmingdale's five run eighth would send them ahead 6-3.
Farmingdale's five runs in the eighth were scored on three hits. Junior left fielder Matt Weingartner (Westbury, N.Y./W.T. Clarke) singled to score junior centerfielder Frank Yera (Manhattan, N.Y./Claredon). Junior Vinny Block (Mineola, N.Y./Chaminade) had a pinch hit single, scoring senior John Anarumo (Levittown, N.Y./MacArthur) from second. Junior right fielder Frank Ennis (Commack, N.Y./Commack) reached on a fielder's choice, scoring junior Ray Levan (Brentwood, N.Y./Brentwood) from third. Freshman catcher Frank Scarlato (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem North) had a two RBI double, scoring sophomore Kevin Curtis (Riverhead, N.Y./Riverhead) and Labrozzi.
Senior Tom Heeman (Valley Stream, N.Y./Hewlett) pitched five innings, striking out five and allowing two earned runs. Junior right hander Steve King (Freeport, N.Y./Freeport) got the win for Farmingdale State, going three innings with no hits, two walks and one strikeout. Freshman Chris Phelan (Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) went two-thirds of an inning to earn his first save.
The Rams will travel to Neumann College on Friday, April 17th for a non-conference game at 3:30 p.m.
