Baseball Splits with Panthers on Senior Day

Farmingdale, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State
baseball team split a Skyline Conference doubleheader with Purchase
College today, winning 14-4 in game one and falling 3-2 in game
two. The game marked the final regular-season home game for the
Rams' seven seniors - John Anarumo (Levittown, N.Y./MacArthur),
Brian Benvenuto (Dix Hills, N.Y./Hills West), Mike Dietrich
(Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst), John Fabian (Merrick,
N.Y./Calhoun), Rich Gili (Manorville, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River),
Mike Gionesi (Bellmore, N.Y./Mepham) and Tom Heeman (Valley Stream,
N.Y./Hewlett). Farmingdale now holds a 21-13, 11-3 record with
three games left to play.
Heeman (5-2) pitched the win in the first game, throwing six and
two-thirds innings, striking out five batters and allowing just two
earned runs. Center fielder Anarumo finished 2-for-4 with two runs
scored, a stolen base and one RBI, while second baseman Gili had
two hits and two RBI's. Designated hitter Dietrich went 1-for-3
with two RBI's and two runs scored. Shortstop Benvenuto was 1-for-2
with an RBI and two runs scored.
In game two the Rams scored one run in the bottom of the fourth
off a triple by junior center fielder Matt Weingartner (Westbury,
N.Y./Clarke), and an RBI from junior right fielder Frank Ennis
(Commack, N.Y./Commack).
Purchase scored two in the top of the fifth to hold a 2-1 lead
going into the seventh, before adding another run for a 3-1
advantage.
In the bottom of the seventh, Farmingdale's junior left fielder
Don Moscatelli (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) hit a single up the
middle, followed by a single to right center from freshman catcher
Frank Scarlato (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem North), moving Moscatelli
over to second. Junior third baseman Steve King (Freeport,
N.Y./Freeport) walked to load the bases. Gili hit a SAC fly out to
score Moscatelli and move freshman pinch runner Vincent Sanquini
(Levittown, N.Y./MacArthur) over to third and King to second, but
the game would end with a strikeout and the Rams would fall
3-2.
Farmingdale State will face Baruch on Tuesday, April 21st in a
single non-conference game at 4:00 p.m. and then close out the
regular-season with a doubleheader at St. Joseph's on Saturday,
April 25th at Noon.
