Rams Drop Pair to Southern Maine and Eastern Connecticut

Farmingdale, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State baseball team hosted Southern Maine and Eastern Connecticut out of the Little East Conference this afternoon in Farmingdale, N.Y. The Rams (5-5) fell 14-5 to Southern Maine (2-1) in the opening game and then were defeated by Eastern Connecticut 8-3.

In game one, Southern Maine's first three batters reached base on walks, which led to three runs in the top of the first inning. The Huskies added two runs in the third inning, increasing their lead to 5-0. Farmingdale State freshman Anthony Ferrante (Holtsville, N.Y.) led off the bottom of the fourth with a walk and later scored on the sacrifice fly by senior first baseman Mike Appell (Westbury, N.Y.).

Trailing 5-1 in the fifth, sophomore third baseman David Zilnicki (Riverhead, N.Y.) hit a two RBI triple, cutting Southern Maine's lead to 5-3. Senior designated hitter Kevin Curtis (Riverhead, N.Y.) later singled up the middle, scoring Zilnicki and pulling the Rams within one.

The Huskies responded with four runs on three hits in the next inning, increasing their lead to 9-4. Southern Maine added five more runs over the final three innings en route to a 14-5 victory.

Farmingdale State was led by Zilnicki who scored two runs and had two RBI. Ferrante was 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored, while junior second baseman Danny DeVito (Plainview, N.Y.) was 1-for-3 with a run scored.

Senior first baseman Mike Eaton (Sabattus, ME) had two hits, four RBI and a run scored for the Huskies. Senior second baseman John Mackey (Danvers, Mass.) was 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs batted in and two runs scored.

In the second game of the afternoon against Eastern Connecticut (3-1), the Warriors struck first with two runs on three hits in the top of the first inning.

In the bottom of the fourth, senior left fielder Ryan Rubenstein (Deer Park, N.Y.) and junior third baseman Ryan Theiss (Deer Park, N.Y.) each reached on walks before sophomore shortstop Ron Remi (Massapequa, N.Y.) hit a two out two RBI double, tying the game at 2-2.

Eastern Connecticut led of the top of the sixth with back-to-back triples and regained the lead 3-2. The Huskies added three more runs in the sixth to extend their lead to 6-2. The Rams trailed 8-2 in the ninth and could only score once in the final inning, eventually falling to 8-3 in the non-conference matchup.

Junior pitcher Chris Phelan (2-1) (Patchogue, N.Y.) allowed six runs and had six strikeouts in six innings of work for Farmingdale State.

Senior designated hitter Jim Schult (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) was 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored for Eastern Connecticut. Junior pitcher Jim Dimon (Seymour, Conn.) improved to 2-0 on the season after allowing only two earned runs on three hits in 6.1 innings.

Farmingdale State will host Southern Maine at noon and Eastern Connecticut at 3:00 p.m. tomorrow.
