Castleton State Advances with Win Over Skidmore

#6 Castleton State - 8, #5 Skidmore - 1

Farmingdale, N.Y. - Castleton State defeated Skidmore, 8-1, this afternoon to advance in the NCAA Division III Farmingdale Baseball Regional hosted by Farmingdale State College. The Spartans (34-15) will play tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. against a winner to be determined, while the Thoroughbreds (30-17) have been eliminated from the tournament.

Castleton State took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as senior center fielder David Brandt (Contoocook, N.H.) scored on a Skidmore fielding error. The Spartans increased their lead to 2-0 in the third on an RBI single to center by junior designated hitter Zak Mayo (Avon, Conn.) scoring Ryan Zielinski (Schenectady, N.Y.).

In the bottom of the fourth, Castleton State added three runs all scored with two outs to open up a 5-0 advantage.

Skidmore cut the deficit to 5-1 in the sixth inning on an RBI single up the middle by senior left fielder Brian Lowry (West Hartford, Conn.) which scored Leejay Pollacchi (Porter Corners, N.Y.).

The Spartans added three runs in the eighth to extend the lead to 8-1 before shutting down Skidmore in the final inning.

Mayo was 2-for-3 at the plate with 2 RBI, while sophomore left fielder Macyn Clifford (Brookline, N.H.) had two hits and two runs scored for Castleton State. Senior pitcher Dakota Aker (Schenectady, N.Y.) improved to 6-3 on the season after allowing one run and striking out eight in eight innings of work.

Skidmore was led by Lowry who was 1-for-2 with a run batted in. Sophomore pitcher Isaac Forman (New York, N.Y.) fell to 7-3 after allowing five runs and five hits in five innings pitched.
