The #2 seeded Mount Saint Mary Blue Knights (17-10) upset #1 seed Farmingdale State (20-8) to become the 2004-05 Skyline Conference Menís Basketball Champions. Mount Saint Mary now receives the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament and will find out their opponent tomorrow during Selection Sunday.
After a tied first half 34-34, the Blue Knights took a quick lead in the second and would only trail for one minute of the second half. The Rams cut the lead to four points with 49 seconds left, before junior Brandon Welden (Elmsford, NY/Alexander Hamilton) sealed the victory for the Blue Knights hitting four free throws in the final minute. Weldon finished the night with 21 points, 5 assists and four steals. Sophomore Mike Hoyt (Florida, NY/S.S. Seward) hit 4-of-9 behind the arc, totaling 19 points for Mount Saint Mary. Senior Roberto King (Hempstead, NY/Holy Trinity) chipped in 16 points.
Junior Kenny McMillan (Bronx, NY/All Hallows) led the Rams in scoring with 18 points and had four steals. Senior Damien McKenzie (Lakeview, NY/Malverne) totaled 14 points, breaking the schools All-Time scoring record with 1339 points to date. Freshman Brandon Nieves (Harlem, NY/All Hallows) finished with 15 points, shooting 3-of-6 from behind the arc.
Farmingdale State will now await an ECAC bid to continue the Ď04-Ď05 season.
