Darnell is a 2008 graduate of Vanguard High School, where he led PSAL in scoring. He transferred to Farmingdale State from Hostos Community College, where he was named Second Team All-Region XV for 2010-11. He also played a season at Ulster County Community College and was named to the Mid Hudson Conference First Team during the 08-09 season. He is the son of Harriet Tice.
