Balanced Scoring Attack Leads Rams over Mount Saint Vincent

Farmingdale, N.Y. – The Farmingdale State men's basketball team defeated the College of Mount Saint Vincent, 95-61, in a Skyline Conference game this afternoon. The Rams improved to 15-5 overall and 11-2 in the conference, while the Dolphins dropped to 8-12, 6-7 in Skyline play.
Junior forward AJ Matthews (Brooklyn, N.Y.) opened the game with a layup for the 2-0 Farmingdale State lead. Mount Saint Vincent tied the game 2-2 on a layup by junior guard Shaquille Cunningham (Brooklyn, N.Y.), before senior guard Joshua Smith (Deer Park, N.Y.) hit a 3-pointer to give the Rams a 5-2 lead and they would never look back as they led by as much as 17 points throughout the first half. Smith led all scorers in the first with 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting.
In the second, Farmingdale shot 52-percent from the field and 41-percent from 3-point territory as they cruised to the 34-point victory. The Rams held the Dolphins to 30-percent shooting.
Matthews and Smith each recorded a game-high 18 points. Matthews recorded his 18th straight double-double as he pulled down 14 rebounds along with four blocks, while Smith dished off three assists and had four steals. Senior guard Dyshaun Flournoy (Brentwood, N.Y.) had 15 points and junior forward Leo Esonwune (Jamaica, N.Y.) scored 12 points and eight rebounds in 12 minutes played. Freshman forward Ibrahim Johnson (New York, N.Y.) grabbed 10 rebounds.
For Mount Saint Vincent, junior guard Sean Caputo (Staten Island, N.Y.) posted a team-high 17 points, including 5-of-6 from long range. Senior forward Cody Gauvard (Rockaway, N.Y.) finished with 11 points, five steals and three assists.
The Rams will now host Yeshiva University on Tuesday night, February 7, at 8:00 p.m.
