Farmingdale State - 69, Purchase College - 68
Purchase, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State men's basketball team took a 69-68 lead in the final seconds and held on for the win last night over Purchase College. The Rams improved to 17-5 overall, 13-2 in the Skyline, while the Panthers fell to 10-12, 8-7.
In the first, the Rams led by 14 points, 25-9, with 9:27 left in the half. The Panthers made a comeback with a 15-4 run over the next six minutes, trailing 29-26. Farmingdale held Purchase to just four free throws before the break and led 35-30 at halftime.
The Rams held the lead until the 11-minute mark, when the Panthers tied the game, 46-46, on a layup and with the foul on the play, they took a 47-46 advantage after a successful free throw. On the next possession, they pushed their lead to four, 50-46, with a 3-pointer but Farmingdale was not giving up.
With 7:42 remaining, junior forward AJ Matthews (Brooklyn, N.Y.) made a layup and was fouled, tying the game at 54-54 on the 3-point play. The game would see five more ties over the final minutes, before a layup by senior guard Joshua Smith (Deer Park, N.Y.) with seven seconds remaining gave the Rams the 69-68 lead. A final attempt by Purchase would fall short and Farmingdale would take the conference win.
The Rams were led by Matthews with game-highs of 21 points, 15 rebounds and two blocks, his 20th straight double-double of the year. Smith finished with 17 points and three steals. Junior guard Ryan Davis (Flushing, N.Y.) had 12 points, eight rebounds and three assists.
Purchase junior forward Justin Person (Greenburgh, N.Y.) scored a team-high 15 points and eight rebounds, while junior guard Amar Reynolds (Bronx, N.Y.) had 14 points and three assists.
Farmingdale State will face The Sage Colleges next in a Skyline game on Saturday, February 11th at 3:00 p.m.
