Valiants Hold Off Late Rally to Defeat Rams in Season Opener

Manhattanville - 9, Farmingdale State - 7

Purchase, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State men's lacrosse team opened up their season against former Skyline opponent Manhattanville College in Purchase, N.Y. The Valiants and sophomore Joey Hasbrouck (Wantagh, N.Y.), who tallied a career-high four assists, held off a late rally to defeat the Rams by a score of 9-7 Wednesday at GoValiants.com Field.

The Valiants struck first as Hasbrouck fed Mike Strauss (Newak, Del.) for a man-up goal midway through the first quarter. Hasbrouck would find Strauss again with a man-up in the second quarter for Strauss’ team-high fourth goal of the season. Despite finding the back of the cage first, the Valiants found themselves down 3-2 after one quarter of action as the Rams scored two man-up goals of their own. The goals came from junior Sean Maxwell (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) and freshman Eddie Rifice (Babylon, N.Y./Babylon). Senior Jay Berndt (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) scored the third goal with 42 seconds left in the quarter.

The second quarter was all Manhattanville as the Valiants outshot Farmingdale 20-1 and put up five goals. Andrew McMillin (Garden City, N.Y.) scored twice in the second to lead the Manhattanville attack. Max Garofalo (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) scored his first of the year, and Lance Schulman (Mount Kisco, N.Y.) also found the back of the cage to send Manhattanville into halftime up 7-4.

Sophomore Matt Hanley (Milton, Mass.) tallied the would-be game-winner early in the third quarter firing a shot past Leone unassisted. With a comfortable 8-4 lead, Farmingdale increased the pressure and scored the next three goals, all even-strength, to pull within one with 11:10 remaining in the fourth quarter. With 27 seconds remaining in the fourth, Schulman scored his second goal of the game to give seal Manhattanville’s second straight victory. Held without a goal in eight games last season, Schulman now has three goals in two games to rank second on the team in scoring.

Maxwell led the Rams with two goals for the night, along with Jo Stroessenreuther (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) with two goals and one assist. Senior Joe Meola (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point) scored one goal and two assists. Junior Teddy Leone (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) finished with nine saves on 42 shots faced.

Farmingdale State will host Oswego in the home opener on Sunday, March 9th at 1:00 p.m.
