Rams to Host Championship Match
#1 Farmingdale State - 5, #4 Purchase College - 3
Farmingdale, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State men's tennis team advanced to the Skyline Conference Championship game with a 5-3 victory over Purchase College today in Farmingdale, N.Y. The undefeated Rams (11-2) will now host #2 seed Mount Saint Mary (11-5) tomorrow, Saturday, April 30th at 1:00 p.m. In just their fourth season as a Varsity program, this is Farmingdale's second trip to the Finals.
Falling behind 2-1 after doubles play, senior Joe Passarella (Flushing, N.Y.) won at 2nd singles over Purchase's Roger King - 6-0, 6-1 - to tie the game at 2-2. Senior Chris Genzmann (Massapequa, N.Y.) won at 6th singles - 6-1, 6-2 - over Ben Ekis and junior Alex Bessarabov (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) won at 3rd singles - 6-0, 6-1 - to give the Rams a 4-2 lead.
Freshman Christian Bormann (Huntington, N.Y.) fell at 1st singles to Purchase's Brenden Keeling - 6-1, 6-1 - and there was just two matches remaining to finish with a score of 4-3.
At 5th singles, freshman Joseph Falcetta (Deer Park, N.Y.) defeated Blake Whitacre - 6-1, 6-4 - to give his team the fifth and final match win needed to advance to the Championship game. Falcetta improved his overall singles record to 12-1 with the win, while he is 10-2 in doubles play.
The winner of tomorrow's match receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament. It would be Farmingdale State's first trip to the tourney, while Mount Saint Mary won the Skyline Championship and made the trip back in 2008.
