Purchase, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State softball
team won both games at Purchase College this afternoon, improving
to 28-4 overall and 11-1 in the Skyline Conference. The Rams took
the opening game 11-2 and won the second game of the doubleheader
13-2. The Panthers fell to 15-9 on the season, 4-6 in the
conference.
In game one, Farmingdale State scored five runs on five hits in
the top of the second inning, opening up an early 5-0 lead.
Freshman shortstop Jennie Angelone (Howard Beach, N.Y./Archbishop
Molloy) would single and later score on a wild pitch in the bottom
of the second for Purchase; however, the Rams would add a run in
the third and five more in the fifth, winning the game on a run
rule.
Freshman first baseman Aubrey Walker (West Babylon, N.Y./West
Babylon) led Farmingdale State going 2-for-4 at the plate, with
four runs batted in and one run scored. Freshman left fielder
Rebecca Richman (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) had two hits, two RBI
and two runs scored, while freshman third baseman Shelby Martin
(New Paltz, N.Y./New Paltz), sophomore shortstop Nicole Farber
(Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot), junior second baseman Lauren Poplawski
(Levittown, N.Y./Island Trees) and senior outfielder Kristina
Cirillo (Brentwood, N.Y./Brentwood) each had two hits in game one
for the Rams. Sophomore Heather Buckshaw (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot)
pitched a complete game, allowing only two runs and striking out
seven for Farmingdale State.
In game two, the Rams had 15 hits and scored five runs in the top
of the fifth, breaking a 2-2 tie. They would break the game open,
adding six more in the following inning.
Farmingdale State was led by Martin who went 3-for-4 at the plate,
including a grand slam in the top of the sixth inning. Martin is
now second on the team with three homeruns this season. Freshman
outfielder Kaitlin Keenen (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) hit a
homerun and had three runs scored for Farmingdale. Freshman pitcher
Hope Zino (Bayshore, N.Y./Bay Shore) allowed four hits and two runs
over six innings, improving to 13-1 on the season.
The Rams next will travel to Ramapo College for a non-conference
doubleheader on Thursday, April 23rd at 3:30pm.
