Softball Defeats Blue Knights in First Round
Farmingdale State - 5, Mount Saint Mary - 3
Farmingdale, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State softball team defeated the Mount Saint Mary College Blue Knights today, 5-3, in the First Round of the Skyline Conference Playoffs. The Rams improved to 31-4 with the win, while the Blue Knights fall to 12-22. Sophomore pitcher Heather Buckshaw (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) earned her 15th win of the season, going six innings with five strikeouts.
After falling behind 2-0 in the third, the Rams had two runners on in the fourth, before freshman outfielder Kaitlin Keenan (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) tied the game with a 2RBI triple, scoring sophomore Nicole Farber (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) and junior second baseman Lauren Poplawski (Levittown, N.Y./Island Trees). Freshman first baseman Aubrey Walker (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) followed with an RBI double to score Keenan for the Rams to take the 3-2 lead.
Both teams went scoreless in the fifth inning, before Farmingdale grabbed two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to make it 5-2. Keenan came up big again with an RBI single, scoring freshman third baseman Shelby Martin (New Paltz, N.Y./New Paltz) from third, while Walker brought in the final Rams run with a sacrifice fly, scoring Poplawski.
The Blue Knights started the seventh with two hits, before freshman pitcher Hope Zino (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) came in to relieve Buckshaw. Zino forced a groundout, pop up and struck out the last batter to secure the victory and pick up her first save of the season.
Keenan finished the game 2-for-4 with three RBI's, while Walker went 1-for-2 with two RBI's. Poplawski was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
The Rams host the remainder of the playoffs on Saturday and Sunday afternoon. The Rams will face #2 Old Westbury on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. The Panthers defeated #3 Polytechnic, 3-0, today in the other First Round game.
