Farmingdale, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State softball team has played six games at The Spring Games down in Clermont, Florida. The Rams began the trip on Saturday, March 17th with 12 scheduled games. Check out the schedule and results.
Saturday, March 17th
Farmingdale State trailed 6-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning in their season opener versus Sewanee. Rams freshman second baseman Haley Schmeiser (Northport, N.Y.) hit a two-run triple and sophomore rightfielder Sabrina Bencivenga (Sayville, N.Y.) followed with a pinch-hit double to drive in Schmeiser and cut the deficit to 6-5. The Tigers would hold on for the win as they brought in freshman pitcher Jackie O'Reilly (Peachtree Corners, Ga.) who forced a flyout and a groundout.
Trailing 3-1 in the fourth inning of their second game against Benedictine (Ill.), Farmingdale State freshman third baseman Kayla Nuñez (Bay Shore, N.Y.) hit an RBI single to drive in junior second baseman Sierra Cardenales (Patchogue, N.Y.). Later in the inning, junior centerfielder Aleysha Midgett (Huntington, N.Y.) stole home to tie the game at 3-3. The Eagles would score the game's next seven runs to open up a 10-3 advantage. FSC tallied their final run of the game on a Jessica Lombardo (Levittown, N.Y.) groundout to drive in Bencivenga as Benedictine (Ill.) earned the victory 10-4. Nunez was 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored in the game.
Sunday, March 18th
A seven-run fourth led Bowdoin to a 9-1 defeat of Farmingdale State on Sunday. Freshman Ruby Siltanen (Alameda, Calif.) held the Rams to only two hits in the game.
The Rams trailed 2-1 in the third inning versus St. Lawrence but an RBI double by Midgett drove in junior rightfielder Alexa Luna (Stuart, Fla.) to tie the score. The Saints tacked on a run in the fourth inning to go ahead 3-2 and a three-run top of the seventh secured St. Lawrence's 6-2 win. Freshman leftfielder Lexie Collard (Deer Park, N.Y.) finished 2-for-4 at the plate in the contest.
Monday, March 19th
FSC trailed 1-0 to Washington & Jeffereson until the fourth inning when junior shortstop Christina Rayfield (Commack, N.Y.) hit an RBI double, Nunez brought home Schmeiser on a groundout and Midgett hit an RBI single down the leftfield line to put the Rams ahead 3-1. The Presidents trailed 4-2 and scored six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, capped off by a three-run homerun by junior second baseman Rachel Johnson (Orchard Park, N.Y.), to take an 8-4 advantage. Washington & Jefferson added a run in the sixth and did not allow a hit the rest of the way as they earned the 9-4 victory.
The Rams fell behind 3-0 early in the game versus Grinnell. In the third inning, Collard hit an RBI single to drive in freshman second baseman Shana Gabay (Medford, N.Y.) and cut the deficit to 3-1. The Pioneers kept Farmingdale State off the board the rest of the way and used a six-run sixth inning to capture a 9-1 win.
The Rams still have six more games to go in Florida before heading home on Sunday, March 25th.
