Farmingdale State Falls to St. Joe's-L.I. in Conference DH

Game 1: St. Joseph's-Long Island - 2, Farmingdale State - 1 (F/8)

Game 2: St. Joseph's-Long Island - 3, Farmingdale State - 1

Patchogue, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State softball team traveled to St. Joseph's-Long Island for a Skyline Conference doubleheader this afternoon and fell in both games. The Golden Eagles earned a 2-1 victory in the first game and followed with a 3-1 win in the second. The Rams fell to 12-14 overall and 8-2 in conference play, while the Golden Eagles improved to 12-6, 8-0.

St. Joe's-Long Island opened the scoring in the second inning of game one on a Jillian McFadzen (Commack, N.Y.) RBI single which scored junior shortstop Lyndsay Smocer (Hauppauge, N.Y.).

The game remained 1-0 until the top of the seventh inning as Rams freshman Nicole Gabay (Medford, N.Y.) hit a leadoff pinch-hit double. After sophomore Ginger Sherry (Islip, N.Y.) entered to pinch-run, FSC freshman left fielder Lexie Collard (Deer Park, N.Y.) hit an RBI single up the middle to score Sherry and knot the game at 1-1.

In extra innings, Farmingdale State sophomore first baseman Jessica Lombardo (Levittown, N.Y.) earned a leadoff walk, but Golden Eagles senior pitcher Theresa Cardello (North Babylon, N.Y.) was able to force two pop outs and a strike out to keep the game tied.

St. Joe's sophomore center fielder Franzelyn Russo (Bay Shore, N.Y.) hit a leadoff single in the bottom of the eighth inning and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. After a fly out, a walk and a single set up bases loaded with two outs, sophomore right fielder Ashley Accardi (Holtsville, N.Y.) hit a game-winning RBI single to left field to give SJC-LI the 2-1 game one victory.

L. Collard finished 1-for-4 at the plate with an RBI, while Lombardo, Gabay and freshman second baseman Amaris Negron (Central Islip, N.Y.) tallied one hit each.

Rams junior Jaxie Collard (Deer Park, N.Y.) (7-5) was tabbed with the loss after allowing two earned runs in 7.2 innings of work. 

SJC-LI was led by McFadzen and senior first baseman Samantha Magerovich (St. James, N.Y.) who recorded two hits apiece.

Cardello (6-2) earned the win, striking out two and only allowing six baserunners in eight innings. 

Scoreless in the bottom of the second inning of game two, a single by Smocer and an RBI double by Accardi gave St. Joe's a 1-0 advantage.

FSC would answer in the third as Lombardo walked, junior third baseman Sierra Cardenales (Patchogue, N.Y.) hit a double and sophomore catcher Kimberly Basile (Levittown, N.Y.) hit an RBI single to left to tie the game at 1-1.

With two outs in the bottom of the inning, Cardello singled before senior catcher Kristen Arbiter (Seaford, N.Y.) hit a double to put runners on second and third. Smocer would bat next and hit a two-run triple to right-center field to put the Golden Eagles ahead 3-1.

Farmingdale State was only able to produce one hit over the final four innings as St. Joseph's-Long Island won the second game, 3-1.

Lombardo ended with a hit, two walks and a run scored, while Basile was 1-for-3 with an RBI.  

Sophomore pitcher Julia Walpole (Mahopac, N.Y.) (5-3) took the loss as she allowed three runs in six innings on the mound.

For St. Joe's, Smocer was 2-for-3 with two RBI's and a run scored and both Cardello and Arbiter went 1-for-3 with one run scored.

Senior pitcher Ashley Blydenburgh (Middle Island, N.Y.) (6-2) earned her sixth win of the season after striking out six and only allowing one earned run.

The Rams next host St. Joseph's-Brooklyn for a Skyline doubleheader on Sunday, April 22nd at noon.
