Game 2: Mount Saint Mary - 6, Farmingdale State - 1

Farmingdale, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State softball team hosted Skyline opponent Mount Saint Mary for a doubleheader this afternoon and fell in both games. The Knights (17-14, 15-1 Skyline) won the first game, 2-1, before capturing the second, 6-1. The Rams fell to 13-17 overall and 9-5 in the conference.

MSMC junior center fielder Amanda Almodovar (Goshen, N.Y.) led off game one with a single, stole second base and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by senior second baseman Courtney Barbara (Fishkill, N.Y.). After senior pitcher Cindy Connoly (Walden, N.Y.) reached first on a walk, FSC junior pitcher Jaxie Collard (Deer Park, N.Y.) forced the next batter to ground into a 4-6-3 double play to end the threat.

Farmingdale State got on the board in the bottom of the second as junior shortstop Christina Rayfield (Commack, N.Y.) led off with a double down the right field line and was driven in on an RBI single by sophomore catcher Kimberly Basile (Levittown, N.Y.) to give the Rams a 1-0 advantage.

With one out in the top of the fifth inning, the Knights would load the bases on a pair of walks and a single. After Collard forced a foul out, Knights sophomore shortstop Emily Lang (Westtown, N.Y.) hit a two-run single to left center to put the Knights ahead 2-1.

Still trailing by one in the bottom of the seventh, the Rams would get a baserunner on a one-out, pinch-hit single by sophomore Julia Walpole (Mahopac, N.Y.) but Connoly would retire the next two batters on a ground out and a pop out to secure Mount Saint Mary's 2-1 win.

Rayfield was 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Basile ended 1-for-3 with one run batted in.

Collard (7-7) was tabbed with the loss after allowing two runs in seven innings.

Lang led the way for the Knights, going 3-for-3 with two RBI's, while Almodovar and Barbara each tallied two hits.

Connoly (10-8) earned the win as she struck out nine in a complete game.

Scoreless in the bottom of the third inning of the second game, FSC junior third baseman Sierra Cardenales (Patchogue, N.Y.) hit a two-out RBI single up the middle to score Rayfield and give the Rams a 1-0 advantage.

MSMC quickly responded in the top of the fourth as they scored three runs on just one hit. After loading the bases on two walks and a hit by pitch, Mount Saint Mary scored their three runs on a ground out, an RBI single up the middle from senior right fielder Taylor Canto (Walden, N.Y.) and a wild pitch to take the 3-1 lead.

The Knights would add a run in the sixth and two more in the seventh as they went on to earn the 6-1 game two victory. Mount Saint Mary sophomore pitcher Bridget Bennett (Gardiner, N.Y.) (W, 6-6) did not allow a hit over the final four innings of the game.

Cardenales, Rayfield and junior right fielder Alexa Luna (Stuart, Fla.) each tallied one hit in the loss.

For the Knights, Lang finished with two hits, two runs scored and an RBI, while Canto was 2-for-4 with two RBI's. Both Barbara and senior catcher Kathryn Eiler (Merrick, N.Y.) recorded two hits and a walk in the win.

The Rams next host Sarah Lawrence in a Skyline Conference doubleheader on Sunday, April 29th starting at 11:00 a.m.
