Rams Fall to #2 St. Joe's-LI; Record First Loss in Double-Elimination Softball Championship

#2 St. Joseph's-Long Island - 8, #3 Farmingdale State - 0  (F/6)

Patchogue, N.Y. - Third-seeded Farmingdale State faced #2 St. Joseph's-Long Island in their first game of the double-elimination Skyline Conference Softball Championship and fell, 8-0, in six innings. With the loss, the Rams next will play #4 Mount Saint Vincent in an elimination game tomorrow at 1:00 p.m., while the Golden Eagles will square off against #1 Mount Saint Mary at 11:00 a.m. Each game of the championship will be played at St. Joseph's-Long Island.

Tied 0-0 in the bottom of the third, SJC-LI (19-8) senior first baseman Samantha Magerovich (St. James, N.Y.) reached second on an FSC (16-18) fielding error and advanced to third on a Franzelyn Russo (Bay Shore, N.Y.) bunt single. In the next at-bat, junior third baseman Jillian McFadzen (Commack N.Y.) put the Golden Eagles ahead 1-0 with a sacrifice fly to center field.

With two outs and runners on first and second in the fourth, the Golden Eagles took a 2-0 lead on a Magerovich RBI single to left. After an RBI single to left center by freshman left fielder Zoe Kelly (Levittown, N.Y.), Russo followed with a 2 RBI single up the middle to increase the advantage to 5-0.

SJC-LI added the final three runs of the game in the bottom of the sixth to close out the 8-0 run-rule victory.

Russo led the way for the Golden Eagles after going 3-for-4 at the plate with a run scored and 2 RBI. Senior pitcher Theresa Cardello (North Babylon, N.Y.) improved to 11-3 after tossing a complete game one-hitter with two strikeouts.

Farmingdale State junior pitcher Jaxie Collard (Deer Park, N.Y.) (9-8) recorded the loss after allowing five runs (four earned) on five hits in four innings of work.
