Queens, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State softball team picked up two Skyline Conference victories, 10-0 and 6-3, over St. Joseph's-Brooklyn this afternoon. With the wins, the Rams improved to 15-13 overall and 13-1 in the conference.
After a scoreless first inning in game one, FSC freshman second baseman Julianna Prescia (Oakdale, N.Y.) hit a one-out triple in the top of the second before senior third baseman Sierra Cardenales (Patchogue, N.Y.) followed with an RBI double to put the Rams up, 1-0. After SJC-BK forced the next batter to pop out, junior catcher Kimberly Basile (Levittown, N.Y.) hit a single up the middle to score Cardenales and go in front, 2-0.
The game remained 2-0 until the top of the sixth inning when Farmingdale State scored eight runs on 10 hits to take a commanding 10-0 advantage. Junior first baseman Jessica Lombardo (Levittown, N.Y.), Prescia and Cardenales tallied three straight doubles to open the inning before junior pitcher Julia Walpole (Mahopac, N.Y.) produced an RBI single to put FSC ahead, 5-0. After senior right fielder Aleysha Midgett (Huntington, N.Y.) and freshman center fielder Priscilla Rivera (Brentwood, N.Y.) each recorded RBI singles, Lombardo registered a three-run double to give Farmingdale State a 9-0 advantage. FSC added their 10th run on another RBI double from Cardenales.
Walpole (W, 4-2) did not allow a run in the bottom of the inning as she earned the complete game shutout and FSC went on for the 10-0 run-rule victory.
Cardenales was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with three doubles, three runs batted in and one run scored, while Lombardo tallied two doubles and three RBI's. Prescia finished 3-for-4 with a double, triple, RBI and two runs scored and Rivera tallied two hits, a double and one run batted in. Walpole, Basile and Midgett each had one hit, one run and an RBI in the victory.
In game two, FSC scored two runs in the top of the first inning. Sophomore left fielder Lexie Collard (Deer Park, N.Y.) led off the game with a single and Rivera walked. After a pop out, Lombardo and Prescia tallied back-to-back RBI singles to put the Rams up, 2-0.
The Bears (10-17, 5-7 Skyline) cut their deficit to 2-1 with an RBI single in the bottom of the second but Farmingdale State quickly answered with a run in the top of the third to regain a two-run advantage.
Leading 4-2 in the top of the sixth, the Rams added a run after Cardenales singled, junior Cathleen Cassese (Bethpage, N.Y.) came in to pinch-run and moved all the way to third base on a sacrifice bunt. Basile was the next batter and she tallied an RBI single to put FSC up by three.
After each team added a run to make it 6-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh, sophomore Madeleine Smith (San Diego, Calif.) pitched a 1-2-3 inning to secure the game two victory for the Rams.
Smith (W, 5-5) tossed her seventh complete game and earned her fifth win of the season, while striking out a season-high five batters.
Prescia led the way offensively for Farmingdale State with a game-high three hits, including a double, and two runs batted in. Lombardo tallied a hit and two RBI's, while Collard went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. Rivera finished with one hit, a walk, two runs scored and an RBI in the win.
Farmingdale State next hosts non-conference opponent Staten Island on Tuesday, April 23rd at 3:00 p.m.
