Farmingdale, N.Y. - The Old Westbury women's basketball team improved to 7-3, 2-2 in the Skyline tonight with a 69-62 victory over first place Farmingdale State in Farmingdale, NY. The Rams fell to 8-3, 4-1 Skyline with the loss, suffering their first Conference loss of the season.
The Panthers took a 33-31 lead into the half, as Old Westbury's junior forward Monique Midy (Westbury, NY/Westbury) finished the first with 18 points. In the second, the Panthers held onto the lead until 1:39 on the clock, when freshman guard Kimberly Blakney (Brooklyn, NY/Benjamin Banneker) grabbed her own rebound and sank the put back for a one-point lead, 62-61.
Old Westbury took back the lead on two successful free throws, 63-62, and then forced two Farmingdale turnovers on the next two possessions. Sophomore guard Leah Hernandez (Forest Hills, NY/Christ the King) stole the ball and passed up to freshman guard Jazmin Bradley (Flushing, NY/Flushing), who connected on the fast break for the three-point cushion with 52 seconds left. The Panthers forced another turnover with 31 seconds remaining and senior guard Danna Purnell (Deer Park, NY/Deer Park) would hit 4-of-4 free throws in the final seconds for the 69-62 win.
For Old Westbury, Midy finished with a game-high 24 points, while Purnell added 14 points and 15 rebounds. Hernandez and Bradley both tallied 10 points.
Farmingdale's Blakney led the team with 19 points and junior guard Christine Daley (Elmont, NY/Elmont) added 12 points. Junior guard Dankery Perez (New York, NY/Manhattan Center) finished with 11 points and five assists.
The Rams will travel to Kings Point, NY to face Merchant Marine on Saturday, January 13th for a Skyline game at 2:00pm.
