Farmingdale State - 74, Old Westbury - 73

Farmingdale, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State women's basketball team defeated Old Westbury (7-4, 3-1) tonight in a 74-73 conference victory to improve to 6-3 overall and 4-0 in the Skyline. Junior forward Gabrielle Green (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) scored career-highs of 21 points and 13 rebounds to push the Rams to victory.

Old Westbury led at the break, 35-34, and in the second half the lead changed 11 times. A six-point advantage by the Rams, with 14:44 to play, proved to be the largest lead over the next 12 minutes. Old Westbury went ahead by four points, 71-67, started with a three-pointer by sophomore guard Samantha Johnson (Queens Village, N.Y./Martin Van Buren) with just under two minutes remaining.

Farmingdale began the comeback as Green connected in the paint to cut the deficit to 71-69, with 1:30 on the clock. The Rams forced a turnover and a foul on the next Panther possession, and one-of-two successful free throws by junior guard Kim Blakney (Brooklyn, N.Y./Benjamin Banneker) put her team behind by just one point with 49 seconds left. Another Old Westbury foul gave Blakney two more shots, and she sank both shots, 72-71 Farmingdale.

The crucial basket at the end was forced by a Blakney steal and a layup by freshman guard Shemique Hooks (Westbury, N.Y./Westbury) with the assist by junior guard Tiffara Steward (Elmont, N.Y./Sewanhaka) for the three point lead with 21 seconds remaining. The Panthers were able to make one more layup, but fell by one.

For Farmingdale, Blakney finished with 16 points, while Hooks contributed 14 of her own. Freshman forward Dominique Cunningham (Amityville, N.Y./Copiague) pulled down 12 rebounds.

Old Westbury's Johnson finished with 23 points, senior guard Pamela Robinson (Wheatley Heights, N.Y./HHH West) had 17 rebounds, while freshman center Courtney Milton (Bronx, N.Y./Washington Irving) had a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds.

The Rams will travel to St. Joseph's on Thursday, January 8th for another conference game against St. Joseph's in Patchogue, N.Y. at 5:30 p.m.
