Rams Win New Paltz Tournament
Farmingdale State - 69, New Paltz - 63
New Paltz, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State women's
basketball team defeated New Paltz, 69-63, in the championship game
of the Rino’s Pizza Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday night.
Farmingdale State senior guard Kim Blakney (Brooklyn, N.Y./Benjamin
Banneker) had a double-double with game-highs of 25 points and 12
steals and earned All-Tournament honors with her performance.
Senior guard Juanita Chappel (Brooklyn, N.Y./Grand Street Campus)
earned Tournament MVP honors.
In the first half, the Hawks (2-1) scored the games first 10 points, before the Rams responded with a 20-3 run over the next eight minutes to take a 20-13 lead. Farmingdale pushed their lead to 12 points, but the Hawks were able to cut the lead to six, 36-30, at the break.
The Hawks fell down by 10 in the second half, but battled back to take the lead, 60-58 with 5:59 remaining. With three ties over the final minutes, Chappel hit one-of-two free throws to give the Rams the 63-62 advantage with 2:19 showing on the clock, while Blakney made three layups over the next six possessions for the seven-point win.
Sophomore forward Dominique Cunningham (Amityville, N.Y./Copiague) grabbed a team-high seven rebounds for Farmingdale State, along with her nine points scored. Senior guards Kamaya Miller (Brooklyn, N.Y./Midwood) and Tiffara Steward (Elmont, N.Y./Sewanhaka) also added nine points each. Chappel finished with seven points and four steals.
Senior Maggie Farrell was named to the All-Tournament Team after netting 14 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals. Sophomore Caitlin Irwin had a team-high 15 points and six rebounds and senior Carly Minehan had a double-double with 13 points and a game-high 15 rebounds.
The Rams will return to action on Tuesday, December 1st as they host St. Joseph's at 6:00 p.m., followed by the men's game at 8:00 p.m.
