Women's Soccer Ties Maine Maritime in Season Opener
Sep 1, 2006

The Farmingdale State women's soccer team opened up the 2006 season against Maine Maritime on Friday night in Castine, Maine. As part of the Lady Mariner Invitational, MMA officially debuted the new state of the art Sprinturf playing surface on Ritchie Field, battling the Rams to a 1-1 tie after two overtimes.

Despite being outshot 13-4 in the first half, the Lady Mariners took the lead when Diana Manatt-Rogers (Conway, MA) fed a through ball to senior Kristen Gaylord (Auburn, ME) to beat the Farmingdale keeper Janelle Reif (New Hyde Park, NY) from 10 yards out at the 43:34 mark in the first half.

Coming out strong in the second half, it didn't take the Rams long to tie the game up when freshman forward Renee Schondebare (Selden, NY) got on the end of a cross from senior Jessica Graziano (Levittown, NY) in the 53rd minute of play.

Both goalkeepers proved difficult to beat and despite a spirited performance from both teams, the score remained tied 1-1 at the end of regulation. In goal for the Lady Mariners, Hillary Arris (Falmouth, ME made 12 saves on 30 shots, while the Rams tandem of Reif and Kim Sontag(Lynbrook, NY) made a total of 7 saves on 10 shots.

Despite both teams pushing forward in search of a winner, the two ten minute sudden-victory overtime periods remained deadlocked. Farmingdale State (0-0-1) takes on the Fairleigh Dickinson University Devils (NJ) at 5:00pm on Saturday and the Lady Mariners (0-0-1) conclude tournament play when they host FDU on Sunday at 3:00pm.
