Cortland State - 4, Farmingdale State - 0

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Junior Alyssa Cerroni (Endwell, N.Y./Maine-Endwell) scored a pair of goals and assisted on a third to lead the Cortland women’s soccer team to a 4-0 victory over Farmingdale State on Tuesday afternoon in a driving rain storm. The Red Dragons improved to 10-5-2 with the win, while the Rams fell to 11-6.

Sophomore Nicole Bader (Rochester, N.Y./Penfield) and freshman Carly Williams (Emerson, N.J.) each collected a goal for Cortland, and freshman Kelsey Allen (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) tied a school record with three assists, last accomplished by Kelsey Geary versus Potsdam in 2003. Senior goalie Megan Thayer (Macedon, N.Y./Wayne Central) made one save to record her second shutout of the season.

Sophomore goalie Kimberly Sontag (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook) stopped seven shots for
Farmingdale in defeat.

Farmingdale had the first opportunity in the game in the 11th minute. Sophomore Amanda Biondi (West Islip, N.Y./West Isliopp) hit a long, high shot that Thayer deflected with her outstretched hands. The ball hit the crossbar once, bounced in the air and hit the bar a second time before Thayer controlled it in the box. Cerroni scored the game’s first goal in the 36th minute when she one-timed a loose ball into the left side of the goal. Allen sent a corner kick into the box that hit off Sontag’s hands right to Cerroni, who scored her second of the season. Less than five minutes later, Cerroni made it 2-0 as she again one-timed a corner kick from Allen into the left side of the net.

In the 46th minute, the Rams had a chance to cut the lead in half, but sophomore Kristine Ostrem’s (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) bid from eight yards out just missed the top left corner and hit the outside of the net. Williams made it a 3-0 score in the 58th minute when she deposited a shot into the upper right corner from the top of the box. Cerroni assisted on the goal. Bader finished the scoring in the 79th minute. Allen served a long free kick toward the top of the box that Bader flicked with a header that found its way inside the right post.

The Rams have two games remaining in regular season play before the playoffs start on Tuesday, October 30th. They host Polytechnic University tomorrow night, Wednesday, October 24th, in a Skyline Conference game at 8:00 p.m. The game will be played at Tanner Park in Copiague, N.Y.
