POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - Two goals by sophomore Emma Kemp (Albany, CA/Albany) helped the Vassar women's soccer team pick up its second win of the season in a 4-0 win over Farmingdale State on Tuesday afternoon at Prentiss Field.
The Brewers improved to 2-1 and travel to play William Smith in their first Liberty League match on Friday. The Rams dropped to 1-3-2 and hosts Stevens for a Skyline Conference game on Saturday.
Vassar controlled the game from start to finish, out-shooting Farmingdale State 22-1. It took the Brewers three and a half minutes to find the back of the net. Sophomore Nola Solomon (Washington, DC/Georgetown Day) played the ball over the Rams defense to a sprinting Molley Mackin (North Bennington, VT/Mt. Greylock). The freshman forward collected the pass and settled the ball before firing it past freshman keeper Kimberly Sontag (Lynbrook, NY/Lynbrook).
The Brewers didn't score their second goal until the 30th minute, but they kept Sontag busy in the intervening minutes.
With 29:36 to play in the first half, senior defender Ali Fantl (West Hartford, CT/Hall) notched her first goal of the season, unassisted, to give the Brewers a two-goal lead. Fantl beat out an offside trap and muscled her way to the goal where she nailed a shot just past Sontag's reach.
It was all Kemp in the second half. With 40:15 to play in the game, freshman Caitlin Bowman (Schnectedy, NY/Bishop Gibbons) crossed the ball from the left corner. Kemp settled the pass, turned and fired the ball into the center netting.
Kemp scored Vassar's fourth goal of the game and her third of the season in the 74th minute. With some fancy footwork, Kemp beat her defender and then nailed a left-footed shot just under the crossbar and over Sontag's fingertips.
Sontag had nine saves for the Rams. Strumwasser and sophomore Anne Hutchinson (Tampa, FL/Tampa Prepatory) split time in the net with Strumwasser picking up the win.
