Rams Prevail with Last Minute Goal

Farmingdale, NY - The Farmingdale State women's soccer team defeated Rutgers-Camden today in the ECAC Metro semifinals. Freshman midfielder Renee Schondebare (Selden, NY/Newfield) scored with 1:12 remaining in the game to give the Rams a 2-1 victory and a spot in the ECAC Metro Finals tomorrow against top-seeded Manhattanville College at 1:00pm in Purchase, NY.

Farmingdale trailed early after Rutgers-Camden's freshman midfielder Tina Mascia (Deptford, NJ/Washington Township) ran through the middle and sent a shot off the post and in for the unassisted goal 18 minutes into the game. Rutgers was dominating after the first half, with a 9-4 shot advantage and a 1-0 lead.

The Rams responded in the second with two goals. Freshman midfielder Tricia Pickford (Massapequa Park, NY/Massapequa) scored the tying goal with a cross from the right side which found its way into the back of the net. The scored remained 1-1 until the final minute when freshman forward Christina Cascio (Kings Park, NY/Kings Park) took a shot at the top of the box that was blocked by junior goalkeeper Kristen Cargen (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) and Schondebare put back the rebound for the game-winner.

Cargen finished with five saves for Rutgers-Camden, while Farmingdale's freshman goalkeeper Kimberly Sontag (Lynbrook, NY/Lynbrook) made four saves for the win.

Today's game marked the first-ever ECAC appearance and win for the women's soccer team. Tomorrow the team will have a chance for their first ECAC Championship.
