Two Rams Named All-Tournament at Swat Kick Classic
Swarthmore, Pa. – Two Farmingdale State
women's soccer players were named to the Swat Kick Classic
All-Tournament team after this weekend's season opening tournament
at Swarthmore College, including junior forward Kelly LaRose
(Mineola, N.Y. / Saint Mary's) and freshman defender Rebecca
Richman (West Islip, N.Y. / West Islip).
Swarthmore won the 13th annual Classic, after defeating
Farmingdale State 5-0 on Saturday afternoon and then a 3-0 victory
over Moravian (1-1) on Sunday. Stevens Institute of Technology
(1-1) earned a 3-0 win over Farmingdale State (0-2) on Sunday after
suffering a heart-breaking 2-1 double-overtime loss at the hands of
Moravian Saturday night.
Swarthmore sophomore midfielder Sarah Reece (Manhattan Beach,
Calif. / Mira Costa) controlled midfield play the entire weekend,
assisting on three of the eight Garnet goals on the weekend,
including Sunday’s first goal scored by classmate Kelsey
Cline (Stanwood, Wash. / Stanwood). Mills (San Diego, Calif. / The
Bishop’s School), a sophomore midfielder, came off the bench
to score two goals to give Swarthmore the final advantage.
Stevens controlled the action in the Sunday’s first match,
out-shooting the Rams 28-3 on the way to the team’s first
victory of the season. Ducks senior midfielder Salme Cook (Fairfax,
Va. / W.T. Woodson) scored her second goal of the weekend and added
an assist to earn All-Tournament status.
In the first day, Swarthmore got a two goals apiece from Colombo
(Arcadia, Calif./ Arcadia), a sophomore forward and freshman
forward Song (San Francisco, Calif. / San Francisco Univ. HS) on
their way to the 5-0 win over Farmingdale State, the 13th
consecutive season opening win for the Garnets. Garnet defender
Laura Bolger (Centerport, N.Y. / Harborfields), also an
All-Tournament selection, added a goal and an assist while
Swarthmore goalkeepers Lauren Walker ‘09 (Fallston, Md. / The
Hotchkiss School [CT]) and Marie Mutryn ‘12 (Rexford, N.Y. /
Niskayuna) combined for the shutout.
Moravian freshman forward Arielle Caldas (Cherry Hill, N.J. /
Cherry Hill West) broke a 1-1 tie in the 107th minute of the
Saturday nightcap, finishing off a pass from All-Tournament forward
Alessandra Valdetara (Butler, N.J. / Butler) to give the Greyhounds
a season-opening victory over Stevens Institute of Technology.
Valdetara scored the opening goal of the muggy, and buggy, evening
alongside Crum Creek, tip-toeing along the end line before finding
a hole on the inside post at 19:10. The Ducks (1-0) tied the game
early in the second half, when Cook hammered a ball off her laces
into the upper left at 55:37.
Moravian senior goalkeeper Caitlin Corrigan (Perkasie, Pa. /
Pennridge) kept Stevens at bay, posting 10 saves. Corrigan was
selected All-Tournament for her efforts between the posts.
